CROQUIS PROJECT
MOOD BOARD
Before creating my collection, I had to do what everyone does before diving head first into a new project. I had to do some research. In my case,
inspired by one of my favorite designers Vivienne Westwood, I knew I wanted to create something political. I was reminded of one of my favorite characters, Kat Stratford in 10 Things I Hate About You. Narrowing down my interests, I looked through various magazines ripping, tearing, and cutting out images that encapsulated my confidence, femininity, and controversy. I was interested in the text on clothing, layers, the color red, sheer fabrics, as well as heavy leather pieces. After much research, I created my mood board.
The Finished Product
In the end, inspired by the recent events of the tragic overturning of Roe V. Wade and my mood board, I came up with six different looks encapsulating confidence, femininity, and power. My background is made up of scraps of fashion magazines telling stories about different women in power or of interest. I added some pieces with my own black-out poetry to highlight some of my favorite articles. I also liked the idea of adding text to the background, because the lack of equality for the sexes has stemmed from the lack of voice given to women. As for the clothes, I wanted a majority of the clothes to be small or see-through. Although many women get shamed and deemed unprofessional for wearing small, see-through pieces of clothing, I see it as a look of empowerment. I added red to almost every look, illustrating a sense of power. I paired skimpy skirts and shorts with chunky jackets to illustrate the juxtaposition of womanhood. Although women can be caring and soft, they have the ability to be loud and passionate. The middle model with the gown is illustrated with a hard armor-like chest piece with a hand grabbing her crotch. Although armor is meant to protect, her chest piece seems to be doing the opposite, illustrating the misinformation spreading in the media.
